Since 2007, the Centro de Salud Hombro a Hombro has offered primary health care services on the outskirts of the city of Santo Domingo. In addition to its clinical work, it offers permanent educational activities, as well as extramural attention to the population with the most needs in the area.

Annually there are more and more people in southwest side of the Ecuadorian city of Santo Domingo that don’t have access to a healthcare consult and urgent treatment care. This city, which has one of the fastest growing urban centers in the country, has a considerable peri urban low-income population.

Free access to healthcare for the lowest income patients

Even though the public health care system of Ecuador offers free consults to the population, the system is usually saturated, with many that cannot get access to health consults. The situation is becoming more and more complex due to the environment of the COVID-19 pandemic as public health care system resources are highly focused on the crisis response.

Thanks to their supporters it is possible to subsidize the real cost. However, patients that cannot afford even a reduced cost are increasing. Thanks to your support, the Hombro a Hombro clinic in Santo Domingo offers primary health care services for a reduced fee. Due to the pandemic, patients that cannot afford even a reduced cost are increasing.

The Hombro a Hombro Solidarity Project bridges the gap for those patients in need, especially the elderly, children, pregnant mothers and people with disabilities, all at zero cost.

With the support, $15 provides the typical patient a consult and any necessary prescriptions. The rest of the costs associated with the visit are covered by the CSHH. $25 provides the typical patient with chronic disease care and medicines.

In 2020, it is estimated that there will be at least 500 patients needing a free consult from the Hombro a Hombro Clinic and a minimum of 35-40% of them will have chronic conditions. Hombro a Hombro’s goal is to raise a minimum of $9,500.00 to cover the critical needs of the lowest income population, located in the southwest side of the city of Santo Domingo. If this goal is exceeded, more chronic patients with no access to healthcare will be able to receive care and medicines in a continuous care model, benefitting those that are most vulnerable.

Food for all

As a part of the response to the novel coronavirus’ impacts, Hombro a Hombro has implemented a temporary food distribution program to serve the lowest income families in its area of outreach. This initiative is in collaboration with and complemented by partners from government agencies and non-profit benefit institutions.

The basic sustenance basket offered by Hombro a Hombro has protein (eggs), carbohydrates (usually plantains), fruits (usually oranges) and seasonal vegetables. Thanks to the collaboration with local farmers and a cost that varies from $3.50 to $4.00 per basket, it has been possible to offer average families of four food for a week. Currently, this initiative has been supported by the Blue Grass Community FoundationTimmy Global Health, pediatrician Dr. Thomas Young and gastroenterologist Dr. Nicholas Nickl.
