Education for all, an initiative to promote education in times of COVID19

Covid19 pandemic has greatly affected the education sector in Ecuador and many countries in the world. The lockdown measures taken to stop the spread of the virus restricted student attendance at schools. In May 2020 the virtual classes were reactivated, but due to the conditions of many students it has been very difficult for them to access this modality since access to the internet or devices to connect has been limited or non-existent. This reality has deteriorated the quality of education in Ecuador.

As a consequence, there has been an increase in school dropouts, among other problems, as many students do not have the resources or technical knowledge to connect through any digital platform. Professors from the Julio Jaramillo Educational Unit of Carlos Ruiz Burneo in Santo Domingo commented that many of their students no longer even answer the teachers’ phone calls.

Hombro a Hombro received the donation of devices for the Education for All project.

Hombro a Hombro, with the support of Dr. Thomas Young, Shoulder to Shoulder Global and Timmy Global Health, created the “Education for All” project, which seeks to support students who do not have access to the internet and devices to access educational content and do their homework. In this way, it is also expected to motivate them to continue their studies until they return to schools in person.

The CSHH team takes vital signs as a biosafety measure

For this, study rooms have been created with the necessary biosafety standards, with devices with free and free use of the internet. These devices are available from Monday to Friday at 3 times from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Shoulder to Shoulder team accompanies the student users of this service.

Students of the Julio Jaramillo school are the main users of the Education for All project.

“Education for All” has been enthusiastically received by teachers and community leaders. Faced with the country’s limitations to massively immunize the population, this initiative will remain open indefinitely.

2020 fue un año de grandes retos para la humanidad. La pandemia de covid-19 ha evidenciado aún más la necesidad de tener sistemas de salud sólidos e incluyentes, que prioricen a la población vulnerable y de menores ingresos.

Hombro a Hombro ha podido continuar con su trabajo, a pesar de las graves dificultades financieras. Este trabajo ha sido posible gracias al apoyo de Oak Foundation, Shoulder to Shoulder Global, Timmy Global Health y muchas personas que han apoyado las iniciativas de Hombro a Hombro.

We continue serving, thanks to your support

The pandemic has changed us in many manners. New concerns and needs emerged during this time. The communities we served have been receiving permanent care and support from Hombro a Hombro, thanks to you.

Serving the lowest income population

From March to October 2020, we have served 110 patients at zero cost for them. Most of them received medicines and exams.

Food for all

Since the beginning of the pandemic we have distributed 891 food kits to those ones more affected for the pandemic. Due to the economic issues that Ecuador experiences, this is an open initiative.

Open doors

Thanks to our supporters we have been able to keep the attention in Centro de Salud Hombro a Hombro in Santo Domingo. Since March we have seen 6503 patients, 65.06% of them have been women and 27.17% of the total were children below 15 years old.

The Hombro a Hombro Solidarity Project is aimed to serve the most affected population because of the pandemic of COVID-19 in the communities where Hombro a Hombro is present. One of its goals is to keep Centro de Salud Hombro a Hombro open to serve the west side communities on the city of Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas.
